Back in the swing of things

I went from a boring two week spell to a really friggin exciting two week spell!  That means I have interesting stuff to talk about.  How exciting is that?!  (suddenly erupts a smattering of golf claps)  Yes, yes, I’m sure you were all depressed after my last post and were hoping for a bounce back.  And you got it!

So, where to begin… On October 3rd, I went to a party.  I really wasn’t sure how it was going to go.  I had a feeling I wouldn’t know many of the people there. The party was for a friend of mine, Brian Hogan (@bphogan / @ecruby).  He apparently has a party every year like this for his birthday.  Sure enough, when I got there, he was really the only person I knew.  I felt really awkward and uncomfortable.  After about an hour, suddenly that all changed.  I was playing with my phone (like I usually do ’cause I’m an addict), and I hear this “Hey stranger, fancy seeing you here.”  I turn and it’s an old friend of mine, Jon, that I worked with at the help desk back at UWEC when I was a student.  I hadn’t seen him in almost four years.  At that point, the party became awesometastic.  Jon and I caught up for a while.  He even told me that I was his favorite person at the help desk (likewise, Jon).  We always had good times.

After that I came out of my shell and had a lot of fun.  I played Rock Band, chatted it up with people I didn’t know, and ended up staying until 3:00 in the morning.  I didn’t get to bed until about 4:00 am.  Not bad at all considering I wasn’t sure what to expect.  As it turns out (and I shouldn’t be surprised), I mix in well with Brian’s friends.  In fact, there was an interesting dichotomy going on.  There were the geeky programmers, and there were the people the geeky programmers brought with.  I mix well with both.  I spent about half the time chatting with the geeks and the other half chatting with the non-geeks.  I think it was a perfect blend.  I’ve been added to the official invite list for the coming holiday party too.  I look forward to it.

I did some shopping that weekend and finally found a copy of Dragonball season 1.  It was recently released on DVD as a digital remaster and uncut version.  I was a big fan of Dragonball Z maybe 9 years ago.  I never saw Dragonball, and after seeing the live action movie, even though it wasn’t great, I just had a sense of nostalgia.  Combine that with Josh, my sort of second roommate, also being into the show, I decided to get DB on DVD when it was released.  Josh and I have been watching it together ever since.  Wow…I never knew Dragonball was such a sexual / potty humor show.  Goku has never met or seen a girl when the series begins.  There’s a whole bunch of scenes where Goku is patting people on the crotch going “You’re a girl too!” or “Yup, you’re a boy!”.  I thought that was incredibly interesting.  The show is progressing very slowly, but that’s no surprise considering the series runs some 150 episodes long, and that’s just Dragonball…then comes Dragonball Z which is 250 some more episodes.  It’s been fun to bond with Josh with the show.  I’ll post more thoughts as the show progresses.

As I mentioned in the last post, Chris’s 30th was coming up, and I made sure to buy awesome gifts.  I went online to wbshop.com and looked through the Harry Potter selection.  I got him the Monster book of Monsters plush, “I solemnly swear I’m up to no good / Mischief Managed” transforming coffee mug, and the Dumbledore’s Army messenger bag.  Admittedly I spent too much because after that, I went out and bought party favors.  I probably dropped 125 dollars on his birthday, but I wanted it to be a good one.  It was, but I did put myself at a bit of a financial risk in doing so. Whatever, it was worth it.  For Chris’ birthday, we went to Manny’s Mexican seafood restaurant, which is Chris’ favorite.  It’s pricey at about $18 a plate average.  Still, it’s very good food.

I actually didn’t get to enjoy the food because for some reason service was a little slow that night.  Also that night were the board elections at the LGBT community center of the Chippewa Valley.  Since I was running, I had to be there in order to get elected.  I didn’t want to lose out on an opportunity to make a difference in the community, and Chris knew how important it was to me.  So he was ok with me disappearing for an hour or so to go to elections.  Unfortunately, despite our 6:00 pm reservations at the restaurant, the food wasn’t placed in front of us until 7:25.  I needed to leave around 7:30.  I ended up scarfing down a few bites, having it boxed up, paying and leaving.  I got to enjoy the company of Chris and friends, but not the food.  Oh well.

I got to elections, and started chatting with some people before the annual meeting started.  The program started, and the three of us that were running were given two minutes to give a presentation about who we were and what we wanted to do.  We all gave our 2 minutes and then came voting time.  It went pretty quickly.  At the end, announcements were made that I was one of the two elected to the board!  Hooray!  We then had a quick meeting of the board members to discuss some logistics, like when we’d have board meetings and who wants to be what on the board.  I ended up getting nominated and elected the Vice President.  That was unexpected to be sure!  I’m pretty thrilled though.  It feels good to be involved again.  Plus, it’s good experience for when I get my non-profit up and running too.

Back to the party, we had a great time.  We played a bunch of games, like Pit, the game of Pride, and an inflatable Penis battle game called “Cock Fight”.  Chris loved the gifts, and in fact, he’s said several times since the party that it was the best Birthday he’s ever had.  The group of us were up playing games and chatting until past 2:00 am, which is quite late for Chris.  What was shocking is that it felt like it was maybe 10:30 pm when we saw what time it actually was.  Once we noticed that, it was like we were all collectively hit by bricks.  Everyone was just exhausted.  What a great night though!

Sunday, we followed up our great party with a great Pumpkin carving night.  We had four pumpkins to carve, and they turned out fantastic.  I’ll post a bunch of pictures of the events along with this post so you can see them.  We ended up with six cups of pumpkin seeds to roast.  I took care of that and made some wonderful seeds that all of us are trying to moderate our intake of lest we gorge ourselves with them.  I used sea salts, butter, olive oil, and a spice called “Butt Rub”, which I got at a place called “Elegant Farmer” in Mukwonago, Wisconsin.  It was a great mix.  I highly suggest it.

Monday was another rush of a day.  Monday evening was my first trip back to Womens studies 301 with Professor Audrey Fessler, who is a very good friend of mine.  When I was in college, I used to lecture her Monday night class every semester.  Since I moved home, that opportunity all but disappeared.  Now that I’m back in town, she asked me to return, and I was excited to do so.  It was a 2 hour lecture to about 30 students.  It was a great group! They were a little timid with questions, and sometimes that happens.  I did a few things I don’t normally do with my presentations, like group activities.  I could definitely tell I was a little rusty, but overall it was a success.  I still have students’ questions to respond to via email.  I really want to make sure I address them all.

To add to all of those goings on, I also got hit with freelance work last week.  So the stress has been on me.  I still have one video to complete, which should happen tomorrow night.  I’m looking forward to next Tuesday evening, when all the stress is gone.  Speaking of Tuesday, I have another UWEC appearance coming up next week.  As mentioned a few posts back, I’ll be giving a forum on Tuesday, October 20th at 7:00 in the Arrowhead room of the Davies Center.  If you’re going to be in the area, stop on in and have a listen.  It should be fun.

This weekend will be a nice oasis in the middle of the sea of stress I’ve had lately.  A bunch of my lady friends from Milwaukee were a little disappointed that I couldn’t make it to Barcamp Milwaukee back on the first weekend in October.  So I suggested that I come down and visit sometime soon.  We could throw a little shindig.  So we are.  This weekend is geeky lady shindig.  I’ll be heading out Friday for some exciting geek fun with the girls.  So I guess you can look forward to my next post talking about that excitement.

So, question of the blog:  Are you a fall person?  What’s your favorite thing about fall?

Noodle portraits are funny

You know…Chippewa Falls can be a little creepy at night.  Last night I drove home from Chris and Lot’s house (not the same Chris that is my roommate).  They live on Lake Wissota…yes yes…the lake that Jack mentions in Titanic (a little trivia…Lake Wissota is man made and wasn’t built until 1917, five years after the Titanic sunk).  Anyway, this area is pretty rural, and I couldn’t help but think of the film A Fire in the Sky on my drive home.  It was the first time I’d made that drive without Chris in the car (this time the Chris that is my roommate).  So yeah…a little creepy.

Anyway, Chris and I were invited to a cookout for Memorial day.  It was a lot of fun except for the fact that Chris had gotten pretty sick on Sunday, which I mentioned in my previous entry.  He seemed pretty decent most of Monday, but as the evening wore on, things went downhill for him.  He went home early.  I stayed and played Volleyball.  I also got to spend some quality time with Chris and Lot in their hot tub.  It was nice to get to know them more.  They’re very nice people.

Today it was cold in the house.  Don’t tell Chris, but I ran the furnace while he was out at work.  What can I say?  It was 55 outside and rainy.  He had all the windows open.  It was 65 and dropping inside.  I had to spend my day in my office taking care of a bunch of things, and I was going to freeze.  I needed the heat.

Finally I think I’ve taken care of everything I need to with the move.  We’ve got the art on the walls, boxes unpacked, etc.  The only thing I had left were the tedious things like changing addresses with everything, updating which accounts billing came out of, and so forth.  I spent a lot of time on the phone figuring out what bills I needed to pay left over from my old place.  I’m grateful that’s all done now.  Plus, I finally got my new check card and checks.  So I have access to my money again.  Yay!

Tomorrow is web design day.  I plan on getting Transcending Productions’ website updated with new content and some actual info about what I do.  Then I will update jessicajaniuk.com afterwards.  I hope I can do both of those in one day without burnout.  I think I can.  We’ll see I guess.  Wish me luck!

Oh…Chris and I watched as much of Clerks as we could tonight.  I’ve never seen it before, and I really don’t understand why it has such a following.  It’s boring as hell.  The acting is not great.  The writing is terrible…people don’t talk like that at all in reality.  There were a few moments that Chris and I laughed at.  I’m sorry if it bothers people, but neither of us liked the film.  We stopped it a third of the way in.  We gave it a fair shot, but if a movie isn’t doing anything for you after a third of it…it’s probably not going to get any better.

We followed that up with the first two episodes of season 3 of Avatar: the Last Airbender and that was fantastic.  That series has such charm to it.  Chris and I had to pause the second episode because we were both laughing too much.  Aang is going to a local fire nation school, and makes mention of a portrait he got of the fire lord.  He then randomly follows that up with “…and here’s one I made out of noodles.”  It’s funny because it’s so true…and we weren’t expecting it at all.  Love it!  Such a great show.  I should own it at some point.

Anyway, I’m off to sleep.  Hopefully I don’t have major tornado, nuclear, or other disaster related dreams tonight like I did last night.  Sweet dreams all!

Party time

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

It’s almost 3:30 in the morning, and I just felt this lingering need to blog before passing out for the night…morning…whatever.  Saturday night we had people over.  Chris has had monthly “board game” nights for the past six months or so, and people have raved about how fun they are.  So, we were bound to have one here.  Honestly, I had a lot of fun.

We played two games.  The first is a long time favorite of mine called “Lunch Money”.  The premise is that you are elementary age school girls beating each other up for their lunch money.  It’s a lot of fun to play, though obviously violent.  We had a blast.  After that, we played Pit, which is a trading game much like the stock exchange.  It went on for a while, and people’s voices started to go from all the yelling.  It was a ton of fun though.  Chris’ friend, Greg, was the come behind winner in the end.

After the games, we felt like watching a movie.  So we watched “Hellboy 2: the Golden Army”, and it was fantastic.  I have to say, it beats the first film of the two easily.  Guillermo Del Toro is a fantastic director and was able to meld action, story, and humor perfectly.  It was a good story with great characters.  It also had a very satisfying last shot.  I recommend it.

My only disappointment with tonight is that it felt more like Chris’ party with Chris’ friends.  A lot of my friends in town are older with families.  So, they’re  not the type to come to a party like this.  Plus, I was the only girl.  It seemed a little heavy on the testosterone.  I hope that the balance changes soon and we get more diverse groups.

We spent today cleaning in preparation for our guests.  It was a good blitz because we got so much taken care of that needed it.  Chris vaccumed like crazy.  I cut the grass for the first time.  We also have had a major dandelion problem.  So I also spread some week killer / grass fertilizer.  I started turning over the garden.  We got the dishes done, bathrooms clean, and even hung my art.  I feel like we’re totally settled in now.  That feels really great.

I have to say, I feel incredibly relieved now that I have money in a bank account again.  I know I need to find employment, because freelance just isn’t going to cut it.  I’m looking forward to finding a place that I can help out, and that can truly help me too.  I really want to take my skills to the next level.

I also have to say…since I’ve moved in with Chris, I’ve not had one day where I’ve felt lonely.  I haven’t had nights where I’m just sitting and staring at my computer screen wondering what to do with myself either.  We’ve consistently had something fun to do.  Granted I was still moving in during that time, but even so, it’s been nice to have someone there.  So far so good on the move.

Anyway, tomorrow may be a relaxation day.  We might work on the garden.  We bought seeds for vegetables.  So hopefully we can get it into shape before its too late.  I better get to sleep so I’m not exhausted all of Sunday.  Good night all!

Drag show

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

That’s right. I went to a drag show.  If you’ve read any of the posts from years ago, you may have noticed that I’m not a fan of drag shows.  I’ve often found them to be degrading and insulting to the trans community.  Of course, I was watching drag shows done by college students…specifically the college students at UWEC.  Needless to say those weren’t very good.

The show I saw on Saturday night was performed by a group of professionals that put on these shows regularly.  There wasn’t an offensive aspect of them at all.  For the first time, I was able to see the statement that drag shows were intended to make.  I had a good time.  A few years ago…I don’t think you’d hear me say that.

This show was a little different.  It was a drag king show.  For those of you that don’t know, a drag king is a female identified person that dresses as a male identified person.  As with any drag show, the goal is to make fun of stereotypes while entertaining the viewers.  The performances were fun and I laughed a lot.  I have two friends that are directly involved with the group, and they were also thrilled to see me there.  I believe the statement made when I came in the door was “YOU FINALLY CAME!!!”.  Haha.

I was invited to go to the show by my friend Tracy, of whom is awesome.  She’s nerdtastic like I am.  She knew so many people there.  I’m not very connected to the community here at all.  I felt a little awkward, but turns out I know many of the performers.  I shot the video for the wedding of my two friends that are members.  So I saw a lot of the performers there.  I doubt they’d remember me though.  One or two did, which was nice. :)

After the show, Tracy decided to go to the after party.  So I went with.  I haven’t been out to a bar in ages.  Aside from the usual cloud of smoke, it was fun.  In fact, I ran into a friend there.  Kate, a girl I met on myspace about a year and a half ago, was also there.  Oddly, despite us living near each other and being friends for so long, we’d never actually met in person before.  It was really cool getting to say hi and talk for once.  Turns out we have good in person chemistry.  It’s always the worst when you have a friend from online, and in person you have nothing to say.  She’d like to get coffee sometime.  I’ll take her up on that.  It’d be nice to have another friend to hang out with in the area.

The other random thing that happened…the drag group has a person shooting video of the events with a Sony HDV prosumer grade camera.  It’s a V1U type variety.  I’ve used them before.  I was eyeing it up, and later on I said hi to the camera girl.  We chatted and she gave me her business card.  Later, she was at the after party, and we got to talking.  She seemed really nice.  We chatted a lot about the biz and what kind of work we do.  It was a good conversation, and I think she likes me.  She told me to e-mail or call.  So I will.  Though it’ll be difficult if she is interested.  As I pointed out in an earlier post…I’m not really dating.

I’ve started work on the next podcast.  I set up a more standard format as suggested by my friend Mike.  I think it’ll work very well.  I also have started brainstorming future podcasts. I’m thinking it’ll be fun to start doing series of podcasts on one subject.  Like…do one episode, expand on the concept the next, and complete the issue on the third.  There’s so much to talk about, and it’s hard to pick each one.

Oh I have to write about this since it’s so karmic.  I tend to make myself nice meals on the weekends.  I figure, I have the time, I’m relaxed, and well…I need good food once in a while, right?  So Saturday I set out to make myself some szechuan beef and chicken.  I found a great recipe online and went out and got the few ingredients I needed.  It took me about two hours to prepare with the mincing of the ginger root, garlic, chopping up all the vegetables, slicing up the meat, etc.  It was one of the best meals I’ve ever made though.  I had to have a kleenex box on the table with me because my nose was running due to the spiciness.  Holy crap was it awesome.

Sunday night I decided to make myself a Chicken ranch pizza since I don’t make those often.  I started making the crust dough in my bread machine, and for once, it wasn’t turning out very well.  The recipe was short on water.  That was an omen right there.  I used the dough anyway.  I prepared the pizza like I always do, but this time, it got very overcooked.  What a waste! I ate the food anyway, but it wasn’t the most fantastic thing ever.  What a contrast between Saturday and Sunday!

I’ve been fighting with Scarlet lately.  She’s been being naughty.  I can’t seem to get her to stay out of the couch.  She climbs inside thinking its a play area, and she chews on parts of it.  She’s surrounded by all the mechanicals of the couch too.  So it’s not very safe in there.  She’s not quite associating getting put in the bathroom by herself with what she did yet.  I think I may have to get some animal repellent and put it in the couch on a rag or something.  I need to somehow associate negativity with it.  If you have other suggestions, let me know.

I’ve had a lot of ideas lately for site designs.  I get very frustrated trying to see them into fruition.  My perfectionism holds me back as usual.  I can’t get it to look exactly as I see it in my head, and due to that, I get discouraged.  I’ll press on though.  It’ll just take me longer.  I know what colors I’m going to use for my JessicaJaniuk.com site design.  It’s going to be a much brighter palette than is there now.  I think once I get it done, I’ll feel a lot better.

OK. I better leave it here.  This post is almost as long as “Twitterpated”.  Sorry Adam…it’s still not 1337 words long.  I’m short by a couple hundred.  Maybe next time. :)
